Shreds & TDA

Shreds & Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA)

We process scrap tires into Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA) and tire shreds that can be used as engineered fill in a wide range of civil and construction projects.

Key benefits of tire shreds and TDA

  • Lightweight: significantly lighter than soil, reducing load on underlying soils and structures.
  • Lower lateral pressure: exerts less pressure on retaining walls and buried structures than many soils.
  • High permeability: allows water to move through quickly, improving drainage performance.
  • Thermal insulation: helps reduce frost penetration in cold climates.
  • Resilient and compressible: can help absorb vibration and distribute loads.
  • Cost‑effective: often more economical than importing large volumes of traditional aggregate.

When designed and installed correctly, TDA has a long track record of successful performance in civil engineering applications.

Civil engineering applications

Tire shreds and TDA can be used in many of the same places you would use lightweight aggregate or free‑draining backfill. Typical applications include:

  • Road and highway projects: embankments, approach fills, and landslide repair where reduced weight is critical.
  • Retaining walls and abutments: backfill that reduces lateral pressure while providing drainage.
  • Drainage layers: edge drains, underdrains, and trench backfill around pipes.
  • Frost protection: layers that help limit frost penetration beneath pavements and structures.
  • Septic and leach fields: aggregate replacement in absorption trenches where allowed by code.
  • Landfills: drainage and gas collection layers, leachate trenches, and protective cover systems.
  • Vibration control: bedding layers under light‑rail or track systems to help dampen vibration.

What we do with our TDA

TDA is produced by cutting scrap tires into relatively uniform pieces, typically a few inches in size. Our operation is permitted as a scrap tire recovery facility, allowing us to shred tires down to a nominal size suitable for use as lightweight, free‑draining fill.

The resulting tire shreds are used by contractors, engineers, and public agencies as an alternative to traditional aggregates in projects where reduced weight, improved drainage, or vibration control are important.

Material properties & compliance

Engineering guidance documents and test data are available that describe the typical density, shear strength, compressibility, and hydraulic conductivity of TDA. These properties help designers evaluate where tire shreds are a good fit compared to conventional materials.

ASTM D6270-98

Our facility operates under the appropriate scrap tire permits and follows regulatory requirements for handling, processing, and storing tire shreds. If you need project‑specific information, we can work with your engineer or agency to provide documentation and discuss design considerations.
